Frequently Asked Questions

At Harlaxton, we understand that for a lot of students the study abroad process is a collaboration between them and their families. While it can be stressful watching your child take such a big step in their lives, we know you play a big part in their journey. Listed below is some information about popular topics in regards to our study abroad program. We want to touch on some frequently asked questions and welcome you and your family to the Harlaxton adventure!

Applications

Applications for Harlaxton are taken online and will open one year before the start of the term that your student will study at Harlaxton for semester programs. Summer programs will be open a minimum of six months before the summer session. Students must apply by the deadline, answer all of the required application questionnaires, and submit the $45 application fee to be accepted.

Flights

There are two options for flights to Harlaxton. You can purchase a flight independently or you can purchase the group flight option. In either case, students have to be at London Heathrow Airport by 10:30 a.m. on arrival day to take the group transfer to Harlaxton College. Detailed flight information will be sent to your student with the travel dates and group option during the semester prior to travel. Our advice is to compare prices and options to get to London on the arrival day. Students will enter all flight details into their myHarlaxton applications, and the Harlaxton team will be at the airport in London waiting for students to arrive.

Excursions and Travel

Harlaxton College offers an excursion program that is an option for all students. View examples of past trips and pricing. Many students participate in these excursions and all college sponsored excursions ensure that a Harlaxton courier is with the group to help with questions and emergencies.

Students also have the option to travel independently. We do require that students follow check out procedures from the manor. Many students find this travel a great option to explore Europe and beyond with friends. The UK is home to many budget airlines that allow for students to travel at a low cost including Ryan Air and Easy Jet. Students have the help of the student development office to answer questions as they plan their adventures. This may seem like a big step for your college students, but we see the growth in self-confidence and the amazing learning that happens when students travel on their weekends.

Health and Safety

Every student that participates in the Harlaxton program will be covered by EIIA International Travel Insurance during their time abroad. It covers emergency medical situations (not things like lost luggage or flight delays). There is also a part-time nurse at Harlaxton who is available to see students with minor health issues. There is also a college counselor that visits the manor each week.

The manor takes security very seriously to ensure all of our students stay safe. There is 24-hour security with CCTV, which is connected with the live-in staff. All students have an ID that lets them in to the manor, and any visitors must check in with security. How we prepare your students

Your student will wither have a series of orientations on the University of Evansville campus (for UE students) or will receive comprehensive newsletters that coincide with the UE orientation classes. Students will learn about logistics and arrival procedures, how to register for classes and options for travel during the semester, amongst other topics. This is a great time for students to ask questions about the process and connect with their fellow Harlaxton travelers before departure. Students will also complete a series of forms in the online application system and will have the Harlaxton College programs office to answer any questions and provide guidance.

Visiting your student

Families are welcome to visit Harlaxton and spend time with their students, and often there is the option for family members to stay in guest rooms at the manor, depending on availability. We do not allow visitors to stay at the manor during the first or final two weeks of the semester, but throughout the remainder of each term, we encourage families to visit students on a weekend when there will be more free time for exploring and travel. It is recommended that families look with their students at the semester or summer calendar for their term to determine the best time to visit before the student’s departure for Harlaxton.
