Finding my home away from home.

“Have the time of your life and make memories to last.”

What made you choose to study at Harlaxton?

Growing up, my dance teacher, who is pretty much my second mom, hosted foreign exchange students from all over the world. Getting to know her students and learn about their cultures made me want to study abroad too.

Did you have a life-changing experience during your time at Harlaxton?

I think the whole experience was life-changing, as cheesy as that sounds. I had never been overseas before nor really traveled on my own. I spent the entire semester just in awe of everything. Before Harlaxton I was a bit of a homebody, but now I’ve been bit by the travel bug and can’t wait to not only go back to England and Europe in the future, but I also have a list a mile long of other places I want to go to.

Based on your experience, what makes the Harlaxton program unique?

I think the academics at Harlaxton make it a unique program. If you go for the semester like I did, you take the British Studies course taught by the four in-house British faculty about British history from before humans lived on the island to current affairs. This class, learning the history of the country, made my experience a lot more meaningful. Additionally, the British faculty live in the manor, so they are at every meal and always around. I loved getting to know them and am still in contact with them.

How has the manor become your second home?

I have so many fond memories there with the people there. You really get to know everyone – your fellow students, the staff, and the faculty. You have your favorite spot on a certain couch and your favorite meal cooked in the Refectory. It is hard to put into words how this place that is so foreign quickly becomes as comfortable and known as your home back in the states.

What advice do you have for future Harlaxton students?

Take a journal and write in it everyday even if you don’t feel like you have anything to say or that that day was anything special. Go into Grantham and meet people – make connections. Try new things – I made a point to try authentic traditional food everywhere I went. Go outside of your comfort zone… Go outside and explore the grounds. Have the time of your life and make memories to last.
