A dream realized

“Make this experience exactly what you want it to be.”

Macy Dimmett

Major: Exercise Science
Semester at Harlaxton: Summer 2017

What made you chose to study at Harlaxton?

It had been a dream of mine since the sixth grade to see the Eiffel Tower, so when I heard about Harlaxton on my first visit to UE, I knew I had to go. Living in the manor and traveling while at Harlaxton was everything I had dreamed of and more.

Did you have a life-changing experience during your time at Harlaxton?

Before I went to Harlaxton, I was having a career crisis. I felt unfulfilled and needed something more. While at Harlaxton, I realized that chasing after big goals is important and doable, even if those goals are terrifying and involve risk. Thanks to my Harlaxton experience, I am now chasing after my dream of attending medical school and becoming a physician, something I was scared to commit to before.

Based on your experience, what makes the Harlaxton program unique?

Harlaxton is unique because it is the entire package of a study abroad experience. You live, learn, and develop lasting relationships in a manor in the English countryside, plus you get the chance to travel all over Europe on the weekends. Harlaxton is an immersive and transformative experience with built-in support from your fellow Harlaxton peers, faculty, and staff.

How has the manor become your second home?

Even though I only lived in the manor for six weeks, it became a safe place for me to explore my goals and passions, as well as form new bonds. I looked forward to coming back to the manor each Sunday after a weekend of traveling, and I never got tired of the first peek of the manor as we came up the drive. I still miss sitting in my discovered quiet nooks journaling or budgeting, taking in the beauty of the manor that truly never gets old.

What advice do you have for any future Harlaxton students?

My advice for future Harlaxton students is to make this experience exactly what you want it to be. Everyone is looking for something different on this journey; and it is up to you to make it yours. Harlaxton can be life-changing if you let it be, try to be flexible and take everything in. Write down and photograph as much as you can, it’s amazing how much the little details that could be forgotten will mean once you return home.
